Design the day: I DOS AND DON’TS

Do BOOK A WEDDING PLANNER We love Liz Linkleter – the ex-Alexander McQueen PR who oversaw Erdem’s nuptials – and the elegant events she curates (above). Then there’s GSP Events, the go-to for the fashion, film and art worlds, who recently produced an immersive four seasons wedding – exactly the kind of challenge that founder Emma Gold thrives on. Don’t SCRIMP ON THE MUSIC You get what you pay for, and it will make or break your party. Nothing clears a dancefloor like a cheap band. Far better to secure the DJ who packs out your local bar, or who hosts that NTS morning radio show you love. Vibe tip: make sure the smoking area, bar and dancefloor are all close to one another – a bar in another room is an instant…

BACK TO THE FUTURE

BACK TO THE FUTURE

STEP 1 BUILD A NEW NEUE KLASSE Reaching for a comforting squeeze of the past while contemplating the seismic changes of the near future is nothing new in contemporary car making. But BMW is reaching and squeezing on a different scale to most. Where the likes of Honda and Renault looked back and drew inspiration for a couple of individual cars to create the cute E and the R5 (see page 86), BMW is looking to an entire generation of machines, the Neue Klasse of the ’60s and ’70s. Why? Because so much that made, and continues to make, BMW great (including the combustion engine) is going out of the window. After a bumpy start, Munich’s electrification starts here, in earnest. With the i3 and i8, BMW went electric early, got burned,…

“The limited edition I created for Saucony Originals pays tribute to ornament, expressed in refined detailing, the hallmark of my brand. Coliac’s unique and irreverent approach blends with the craft skills and values of a historic brand like Saucony Originals. The partnership prompted me to create elegant and unique pieces.” This is how Coliac shoe designer Martina Grasselli describes her partnership with the sneaker brand Saucony Originals, achieved with the creative support of Vogue Talents. Jazz Court, the newest of the models presented in 2021 to enrich its already huge range, is inspired by the world of tennis. Grasselli has reinterpreted it by infusing it with Coliac’s typical eclecticism. In this way she created two versions, one white, the other black, studded with jewel settings, in shades of silver and…

Continuing the history of Pan American Airways in Central America (see Pan Am and the Battle for Central America, Airways, December 2021) Intense competition in the 1940s from TACA Airways and its regional subsidiaries forced Pan Am’s Juan Trippe to establish Pan American affiliates as a counter-offensive. Coincidentally, Honduran President Tiburcio Carias was just then beginning to lose confidence in TACA de Honduras’ flight schedule. TACA’s iconic owner, Lowell Yerex, had sold his controlling interest to TWA, which had re-focused the airline more internationally at the expense of local feeder lines. This angered President Carias, who relied upon TACA for the vital communication links to maintain his political influence throughout the remote and isolated regions of Honduras. By 1943, the President was determined to replace TACA in his country and asked the senior…

Is SPF Makeup Enough?

WHAT IF I WORK FROM HOME? If you’re spending the day indoors (maybe getting nothing more than a little indirect light from your window), makeup with “broad-spectrum SPF” (label must say this) is better than nothing, says Orit Markowitz, M.D., a dermatologist in New York City. “In fact, a recent study showed iron oxides, a mineral ingredient in a lot of makeup products, offer protection against blue light [emitted by phones, laptops, etc.].” But if you’re going outside, you need more protection. 1 start with a lotion The broad-spectrum sunscreen in your makeup would work solo if you used enough of it, but therein lies the problem. To get adequate protection, the rule of thumb for the face and neck is a nickel-size amount. “If you were to do that with makeup,…

Psychology of stargazing

Psychology of stargazing

Glenn has been an avid observer since a friend showed him Saturn through a small backyard scope in 1963. This month, we’re going to step away from our usual observing content and instead take a look at the psychology of skygazing. In short, we’ll ruminate on what makes us backyard astronomers tick. Why do we prefer reading Astronomy to, say, Field & Stream, Better Homes and Gardens, or Popular Mechanics? What compels us go outside on a clear starlit evening and gaze heavenward while our neighbors are indoors watching TV or playing games? I used to think a proclivity for backyard astronomy had to do with a love of the outdoors. That might be because my three favorite activities are stargazing, fishing, and recreational running. All involve being out in open air,…

How do I grow beautiful hydrangeas year after year? —Michelle Cannon, Red Hook, N.Y. Adored for their fluffy pom-pom flowers, these plants are nature’s cheerleaders, typically thriving throughout Zones 4 to 9. But the various types require unique care for lasting impact. To ensure that yours explode with beauty every summer, heed the advice of Ryan McEnaney, communications manager at Bailey’s Nursery, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and a spokesperson for ‘Endless Summer’ hydrangeas, on snipping, soaking, and feeding them. 1. Know Your Variety Most hydrangeas fall into one of three categories: panicle (cone-shaped, like those shown), smooth (large and snowball-like), or bigleaf (bigger leaves—you guessed it—in tighter globes or more open, lacy petals). The first two bloom on new growth; the last erupts on both new and old (i.e., the prior year’s branches). 2. Prune…

The Ultimate Flavor Makers

The Ultimate Flavor Makers

“THE WAY FOOD FEELS IN your mouth plays an important role in how flavorful and enjoyable it is,” says Molly Baz, the author of Cook This Book. “So a key part of selecting ingredients for your dish involves thinking about what textures they’ll bring.” Reach for flavorful crunch from things like nuts, seeds, and croutons, she says. And for balance, add silkiness with a dollop of yogurt or a swirl of tahini. Turn the page to learn Baz’s techniques to make your meals more delicious and satisfying—and healthier too. Give It Some Bite “More often than not, dishes are lacking a super-crunchy texture that I call crispy crunchy,” Baz says. This texture is cooked separately from the main dish, which is why it often goes overlooked. Three of her quick and easy…

Finding Their Light

Finding Their Light

ALEXANDRA GRAY BENNETT and her husband were ready to nest. Finally back together in their native Minnesota—after they married, he had moved to Boston for business school—the couple were looking for an ideal home to start a family in. “We were basically Trulia regulars,” jokes Bennett. “But I remember the first moment I saw our house in 2017. I just had a feeling.” Set in the leafy Kenwood neighborhood of South Minneapolis, the 2,300-square-foot, two-and-a-half-story 1920s cedar-shingle dwelling had a traditional foursquare design, with a room in each corner and a central hall and stairway. It ticked all their boxes: It was simple and beautiful, close to lakes and trails for their Labrador, and—the kicker—walking distance from one of the city’s best playgrounds. Two years and one positive pregnancy test later,…

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE MY FOX NEWS PARENTS

MANY PEOPLE I KNOW HAVE PARENTS WHO are suffering from Early Fox News Dementia, ranting about the perfidy of Anthony Fauci and the possibility of catching critical race theory from an open jar of mayonnaise. But at the same time, they want to give their children parental advice and guidance, though now through the prism of their separate bespoke realities. They want to remain parents, but only on their own racist and hurtful terms. My counsel to these children—stemming from what my closest friends and I experienced, all of us immigrants in our forties from different parts of the world—is to orphan yourself. A few years after graduating from college, I decided to do just that. Not to become an orphan per se, because my mother and father remained thankfully alive,…

Lauren HUTTON On GOING YOUR OWN WAY

I grew up in Charleston and Miami and Tampa. My idea of beauty was a giant orange and yellow grass-hopper with pastel wings that I saw when I was a little girl. I chased my cousin Artie around with it! When I moved to New York and became a model, I didn’t know anything about the industry. I got a job modeling for Christian Dior for $50 a week. Once I started working, I made myself an athlete. I uncrossed my eyes. (Dick Avedon used to look up at me from behind his camera and ask, “Are they straight yet?”) I jumped around. I worked hard. But by 1972, there weren’t many of us models left. All the big girls like Veruschka, Twiggy, and Jean Shrimpton had basically split. I wish…

THE GLOBETROTTER ELLIE BAMBER

Where was the last place you travelled to? “I went to Ortigia in Sicily over the summer, which was really beautiful. It was my first time there. I’m food obsessed, so I did a lot of research on where to eat, and found some gorgeous places, but I also think there’s a real romanticism in just stumbling across a really nice local restaurant. Ortigia was brilliant for that – you could walk out of the hotel and immediately find delicious arancini. And I discovered an amazing fish restaurant right on the water; one evening, there were a couple of locals just playing the most beautiful music while we ate. I loved exploring the churches and cathedrals too, seeing the art inside and appreciating the architecture.” Where in the world are you happiest? “Every year…

A dealer southeastern Ohio advertises750-hp Mustangs for almost $30,000 less than the Shelby GT500. Can a tuned Mustang hang with Ford’s factory hot rod?

In 2013, a customer walked into Lebanon Ford, just north of Cincinnati, and asked salesman Charlie Watson about buying a supercharged Mustang. Watson didn’t have one and the dealership couldn’t build one, and the customer left. The moment ate at Watson. He hated losing that sale, so he spent three years creating a performance program for the dealership to offer what he couldn’t that day. By 2016, Watson had built a following selling small upgrades like cold-air intakes, Roush tunes, and the occasional supercharger. He was inspired to go bigger, though, after watching Smokey and the Bandit: “Hearing that Trans Am fire up and cause trouble was just as amazing as I remembered,” he wrote on the dealership’s now defunct blog in April 2016. In bed that night, he couldn’t shake…

Hands on With macOS Monterey: Improvements Abound

Hands on With macOS Monterey: Improvements Abound

The public beta of macOS Monterey, released by Apple in early July, doesn’t look surprisingly new. Exceptions include Safari, which gets a dynamically resizing tab bar and other conveniences, and FaceTime, which gets a background-blurring portrait mode and screen-sharing features. As you get more familiar with Monterey, however, you’ll find improvements and conveniences everywhere and may wonder how you managed without them. This is because Apple’s annual updates to the Mac operating system tend to have a regular rhythm. Massive updates arrive on even-numbered years: Big Sur, for example, the 2020 update to macOS that was also the first version that ran on Apple Silicon hardware. Updates in odd-numbered years, such as Monterey, look more or less like the previous version but come with under-the-hood improvements that may do more for…

Hands On With the OnePlus Watch: Lots of Promise for Just $159

I’ll admit, I was pretty skeptical before unboxing the first smartwatch from OnePlus, aptly named the OnePlus Watch. At $159, it’s less than half the price of our Editors’ Choice winner, the Apple Watch Series 6 (which starts at $399). And while it doesn’t work with iPhones, it offers many of the same features as Apple’s market-leading wearable. So far, my skepticism appears to have been unfounded. The OnePlus Watch offers a large color touch screen, built-in GPS, 2GB of storage, a 402mAh battery that promises two weeks of power, and the ability to make and receive calls. It also has plenty of health and fitness features, including support for more than 110 workout types, automatic workout detection for jogging and running, rapid-heart-rate alerts, guided breathing exercises, stress detection, and the…

Roku Ultra (2020): Feature-Filled Media Hub

Roku’s 2020 model of the Ultra media streamer is an iterative update to the line. The previous Ultra was already a powerful, feature-filled media hub, so the fact that the new model simply adds Dolby Vision support and faster processing isn’t a letdown. The Ultra can stream 4K HDR content, supports loads of apps and services, and its remote includes a headphone jack for privately listening to whatever you’re watching. It remains a top pick among high-end media streaming devices, but at $99.99, it feels a bit pricey compared with some other new models. PROS: Fast performance. AirPlay and Dolby Vision support. Remote has a headphone jack for private listening. CONS: Expensive. Still doesn’t have a fully functional voice assistant. Missing Twitch. BOTTOM LINE: The 2020 model of the Roku Ultra media streamer…

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

How to Deal With a Swollen Laptop Battery

Lithium-ion batteries pack an amazing punch for their size. They’re robust enough to run our laptops for hours on a single charge, they’re at the core of the latest smartphones, and they even serve as the power plant behind cutting-edge electric vehicles such as the Tesla line. But lithium-ion batteries do have limits. Given how powerful laptops have become in the last few years, we’re relying on our machines for longer than ever. That has implications for batteries: They’re in service a lot longer, too. And sometimes, that means they show the limits of their technology. You may have had this happen to you: A laptop or phone you’ve had for years suddenly stops working, or maybe just starts showing some sign of internal physical swelling. The screen of your phone…

The Nicest Breeze — A220 First Class

ON JUNE 8, 2022, Breeze Airways officially launched transcontinental service using the Airbus A220-300 from Richmond (RIC), the capital of Virginia, to San Francisco (SFO), a prime tourism destination and home to many technology companies. The airline’s founder and CEO, David Neeleman, was on board the former Bombardier CS300 to mark the occasion, and the flight was mostly full. The airline hoped it would be the first of many such long-distance trips. Breeze has plans for 18 transcontinental routes using the A220 to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas. Breeze started service in May 2021, primarily in the Eastern and Southeastern United States, flying Embraer E190s and E195s (see Airways, July-August 2021). With the delivery of the A220, the airline can extend its cross-country reach to the West Coast. Breeze…

The Origins of Dogs

The Origins of Dogs

It’s the soft part of a summer morning, when the sun is barely up and the day’s heat has not yet taken hold. A young rabbit ventures from a thicket of raspberries, nose quivering. Its movement does not go unnoticed. Some 20 feet away, one of two dogs sprawled belly-up on the grass opens her amber eyes. The other dog turns over slowly and looks in the direction of the raspberries. They roll to their feet, eyes now trained on the rabbit. The animal darts for the back gate. The dogs pursue. The female, smaller and more agile, swerves left and right like a cheetah, adjusting course with the rabbit. The bigger male dog thuds behind. They close in on the prey as a team. Without slowing, the rabbit squeezes under the…

BEYOND THE SOUND BARRIER

It’s lunchtime in late October, and 71 stories above Wall Street at 4 World Trade Center, Daniel Ek is strolling along the polished concrete floors of Spotify’s headquarters. He passes sleek sculptures of headphones crafted in neon-hued metal, couch-lined luxury lounges for VIP advertising clients and soundproof podcast studios custom-built for the medium’s biggest stars, then enters a large cafeteria rigged with stage lighting for pop-up concerts. The room is being prepped for dinner with Spotify’s board, which will include a surprise performance by Brothers Osborne—a hip country-rock duo whose hit song “Stay a Little Longer” has been streamed 180 million times on Ek’s music service. Spotify just reported third-quarter earnings, and Ek, a 38-year-old self-described introverted engineer who seldom gives interviews, is having a rare day in the spotlight. The soft-spoken…

It’s April 22, and markets are sinking on a report that President Biden aims to raise capital-gains tax rates to 39.6% for high earners, effectively doubling the rate for rich investors. “It’s anti-American!” Wyden bellows. “I’m very disappointed with American governance right now. Do you think any of these guys actually know what they’re doing?” For an answer, Wyden could ask his father, Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat from Oregon and chairman of the powerful Senate Finance Committee. The elder Wyden is a tax-the-rich champion who dubbed former President Trump’s corporate tax cuts a “partisan tax scam.” His son, by contrast, isn’t registered with either political…

How to Get Ready for a Road Trip

How to Get Ready for a Road Trip

1. BEFORE YOU GO MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE is ready for a road trip. Start with the tires, including the spare, if your car has one: Check the pressure and inspect the tread, looking for visible signs of damage and wear. Top off the windshield wiper fluid and replace your wiper blades if they’re at least 6 months old. For other checks, consider going to a shop you trust, especially if your car hasn’t been serviced in more than a year, says John Ibbotson, CR’s chief mechanic. Have technicians inspect accessory belts and hoses—they can have life spans as short as five years or 50,000 miles—and ask them to check oil, coolant, and power steering and brake fluid for proper levels and potential contamination. 2. ON THE ROAD DON’T WASTE TIME and money…

Cars have always been my passion, and I am rediscovering that joy by building scale models of them. One of the automobiles that grabbed my attention is the Renault 4, so I was happy to build Heller’s 1/24 scale TL/GTL variant (No. 80759). The kit is simple and builds quickly. I added a few details but focused on finishing. I wanted to represent a slightly worn but not destroyed car. FINAL THOUGHTS I PAINTED THE INSIDE of the headlights with chrome circles highlighted with white in the center. The taillights and turn signals were painted with Mr. Hobby Clear Red (No. H90) and Clear Orange (No. H92). These lenses and other small details, including the bumpers, wing mirrors, and door handles were attached with Revell Contacta clear-part cement. I added the few…

Bullitt with GT350 Wings

This year marks the return of the Mach 1 badge, which adorns the fenders of a new special-edition Mustang focused on lap times. Think of it as a replacement for the discontinued GT350, Bullitt, and GT Performance Package Level 2. Those cars provide many of the Mach 1’s track-focused parts, but don’t get your hopes up—the GT350’s 8250-rpm screamer isn’t among them. This Mach 1 has the Bullitt’s 480-hp 5.0-liter V-8, making it 20 horses stronger than the regular-grade GT. What the Mach 1 does get from the GT350 is a Tremec six-speed manual transmission (instead of the GT’s Getrag box). A track-ready suspension, complete with adaptive magnetorheological dampers, bolts to front and rear subframes borrowed from the GT350, while the GT’s Performance-package brake hardware—15.0-inch front rotors pinched by six-piston calipers—puts…

A BABY ZEBRAFISH IS JUST HALF THE size of a pea. A recent look inside its transparent brain, however, offers clues to the far bigger mystery of how we remember—and how we forget. In an experiment that yielded insights into memory and the brain, a team of researchers at the University of Southern California taught the tiny creature to associate a bright light with a flash of heat, a temperature change the fish responded to by trying to swim away. Using a custom-designed microscope, the team then captured images of the animals’ brains in the moments before and after they learned to associate the light and the heat. It’s the first known look at how a living vertebrate’s brain restructures itself as the animal forms a memory. In the image published with…

THE NEW VITAL SIGNS

NEW VITAL SIGN #1: HEART-RATE RECOVERY CAN TELL YOU ABOUT: HEART HEALTH Your body’s ability to ferry oxygen to your muscles during exercise—known as cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF)—is such a powerful predictor of how long you’ll live that the American Heart Association has suggested making it an official vital sign. The gold standard for measuring CRF is a VO2-max test (in an exercise lab or with a fancy watch). But there’s a way to estimate it easily and track its progress at home, says L.A.–based trainer Matt Berenc, C.S.C.S. TEST IT: Check your heart-rate recovery. The fitter and healthier your heart is, the more quickly it adapts to the demands of exercise and the faster it slows down when you’re done. So right after intense exercise, stop and check your heart rate. Check it again…

Ten Years of Stylemakers

Ten Years of Stylemakers

That’s how we describe our Stylemakers—those individuals we’ve been spotlighting over the past decade for their influence on how we live at home. To celebrate this anniversary, we found out what a few of them have been up to since they were last featured on our pages. See how they continue to impress. justina blakeney 2016 When we first profiled Justina, we loved the rich decorating style she coined “Jungalow.” Next came her product lines for re-creating it. This spring, she’s releasing a book that’s part visual feast, part get-the-look guide. Layers are key, as are colors and patterns from nature and travels. And plants? The more the better.

PRINCEGEORGE’S BIRTHDAY Ensure many happy returns with practical shorts and playful dresses Prince George’s eighth-birthday party is sure to be a lively affair, so classic but comfortable attire is called for. Smart stripy shorts worn with loafers and a crisp white shirt are de rigueur for any little prince, while their sisters will enchant in pastel-coloured party frocks and Mary-Janes. Give Me Water Pressure or Give Me Death

DONALD TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE SHOWERHEADS. Well, in one respect, anyway. There is something singularly demoralizing about bad water pressure, and one of the purest joys in this world is having a rinse under a powerful spigot. But this minor creature comfort in the vast sea of life’s indignities requires water, which the human race is consuming an awful lot of these days, so we citizens must do our part to conserve what remains. That’s why, in 1992, the Department of Energy limited how much water American showerheads can splash out to 2.5 gallons a minute. In 2013, amid a proliferation of multiple-showerhead fixtures, the Obama administration updated the rule: The limit would now apply to the total output of all nozzles combined. A few years later, though, Trump…

At the height of what could have been a low-key, Netflix-and-banana-bread winter in quarantine, Shailene Woodley was instead on a plane. Four, actually. That’s what it took for her to land in Patagonia to meet a relative stranger, Thomas Kimber, who had sent her this proposition: Would she like to partner in reimagining ocean plastics into sunglasses? (When you’re on a mission to save the planet, Zoom just won’t do.) Intrigued, she googled him and set up the call that clinched the collaboration—and this 20-hour, masked-up odyssey to the heart of the South American rain forest. “The first conversation we had, we were finishing each other’s sentences in a way that I had never experienced,” Shailene says. “Our ideas on what a future world could look like were so similar.” The…

TRAVELERS’ TALES, FROM NEAR AND FAR ONE REASON I travel is to envision lives other than my own, or to picture my own life in new, irresistible settings. Rarely has that thrill of trying out someone else’s existence felt as intense as it did during my stay at the Patrick & Joan Leigh Fermor House (ariahotels.gr; villas from $600, three-night minimum). This sun-kissed stone refuge sits above a turquoise cove near the Greek village of Kardamyli. It’s located in the Mani: one of the three “fingers” of the Peloponnese, the hand-shaped peninsula that hangs off the mainland. For decades, this idyllic place was the home of Patrick Leigh Fermor, one of Britain’s best-known travel writers, and his dynamic wife, Joan. “Paddy,” as the late author was called, is perhaps best remembered for…

All That Glitters

EVERY YEAR, Kevin Sharkey devotes pretty much an entire December weekend to decorating the 14-foot tree that grazes the ceiling of his sleek New York City apartment overlooking the Hudson River. “You’d think it would take longer because the tree is so tall, but it actually goes by pretty quickly,” he says. Moreover, he enjoys every minute of it, and his efforts are fueled by the excitement of good times—and good friends—to come. There’s a thoughtful method to his yuletide madness, too. He stores his ornaments in bins organized by type, then arranges similar ones in groups before hanging them. “It’s a great exercise of all my styling muscles and instincts,” he says. “I want it to look like it’s encrusted in baubles.” And to that end, he goes for…

Hisense 350-Sq. Ft. Window Air Conditioner (AW0821CW1W): Smart AC

The Hisense 350-sq. ft. Window Air Conditioner is a reasonably priced Wi-Fi-enabled window AC unit that you can control with your voice, your phone, or the included remote. It’s easy to install and did an admirable job of cooling in our tests. It doesn’t offer power usage reports or compatibility with Apple HomeKit and IFTTT like some other smart air conditioners we’ve tested, but it also costs less than many 8,000-BTU models, making it an affordable option for small to medium spaces. PROS: Reasonably priced. Easy to install. Fast cooling. Voice control. Relatively quiet. CONS: Lacks usage reporting. Doesn’t support HomeKit or IFTTT. BOTTOM LINE: The Hisense 350-Sq. Ft. Window Air Conditioner is a smart AC unit that can be controlled by your phone, voice, or remote, and does a fine job of…

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 (2021): A Superlative Aspirational System

We won’t try to keep you in suspense. When we reviewed last year’s model, we called the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon the best laptop in the world—though we later decided it shared that title with the Dell XPS 13 OLED—and it hasn’t done anything in its latest revision to change that state of affairs. The X1 Carbon Gen 9 catches up with the Dell and other elite ultraportables by moving to an 11th Generation Intel “Tiger Lake” Core processor and a slightly taller 16:10 rather than 16:9 screen aspect ratio. Its premium price and lack of an SD card slot still knock half a star off what would otherwise be a perfect five-star rating, but it effortlessly collects yet another Editors’ Choice award as the most desirable executive notebook on…

Beats Fit Pro: Solid ANC

After releasing the relatively affordable Studio Buds ($149.99) earlier this year, Beats is back with a new pair of noise-cancelling true wireless earphones, the Beats Fit Pro. Aptly named, the focus here is on in-ear fit security, with built-in earfins made of a pliable material that truly helps create a more secure seal in your ear. They’re also armed with active noise cancellation (ANC), and since Beats is owned by Apple, you get the company’s H1 chip, which enables features including Spatial Audio with head tracking, Adaptive EQ, hands-free Siri, and one-touch iOS pairing. The sonic performance is classic Beats, with intense bass, boosted highs, and a scooped-out midrange. The ANC is better than average, with effective low-frequency noise elimination. For the price, there’s plenty to like, but the Beats…

Home Tours: Room to Grow

WITH A BABY ON THE WAY, KIERA AND MICHAEL KUSHLAN KNEW THEY WOULD HAVE TO LEAVE THEIR ONE-BEDROOM, 750-SQUARE-FOOT APARTMENT AND FIND A NEW PLACE THAT WOULD ACCOMMODATE THEIR GROWING FAMILY. Their search led them to a two-bedroom, 1,175-square-foot apartment in a handsome pre-World War I structure on a picturesque street. But the dwelling was low on storage and devoid of character. “Over the years it had been gutted of all historic qualities,” says Kiera, who co-owns the D.C. interior design firm Residents Understood. As soon as the couple closed on their new home, Kiera began a top-to-bottom renovation focused on bringing the 100-year-old residence back to its former glory while adding storage and making the space more efficient for family living. The home’s overall footprint remained the same, but Kiera updated…

KATHY METELICA CRAY

KATHY METELICA CRAY

A golf course and pool are nice, but Kathy Metelica Cray prefers to spend her retirement in the company of antique quilts and the people who love them. Today, if Kathy is not researching and writing about an antique quilt’s past, lecturing about New England textiles, teaching a workshop on a traditional technique, or playing matchmaker for a quilt in need of the right buyer, she’s connecting with like-minded people through the Florida Quilt Study Group, which she resurrected in 2018, or the American Quilt Study Group. Though Kathy began quilting almost 40 years ago as a creative outlet from a career in corporate sales, she attributes her current passion to an annual seminar of the American Quilt Study Group that she attended in 2002 on behalf of her company. There she…

MATHEMATICIANS CRACK THE ZODIAC KILLER’S CIPHER

IN THE LATE 1960s, a serial killer self-identifying as “the Zodiac” killed at least five people in Northern California and claimed to have murdered more. In November 1969, the Zodiac killer sent a card to the San Francisco Chronicle containing a 340-character secret message that for more than 50 years went unsolved by numerous detectives, cryptography experts, amateur sleuths and curious others. Wonder no more, true-crime aficionados. After months of crunching code during the pandemic, three researchers on three different continents announced that they’d finally decoded the message. Further bolstering the claim, experts at the FBI verified the solution (and even tweeted about it). The encrypted message didn’t reveal the identity of the Zodiac killer, but it did bring decades of speculation, conspiracy theories and guesswork about this cipher to a dramatic…

E STREET TO EASY STREET

Forty years ago, after returning from a two-year tour of the United States and Europe to support his first No. 1 album, The River, Bruce Springsteen arrived home at his rented New Jersey ranch house, not far from where he grew up in the blue-collar town of Freehold, and dropped $10,000 on his first extravagant purchase: a 1982 Chevy Z28 Camaro. “I’d never owned a new car in my life,” he wrote about the splurge in his 2016 autobiography, Born to Run. “I’d never spent $10,000 on myself. It felt as conspicuous as if I were driving a solid gold Rolls-Royce.” Today, the man who once sang of being haunted by the ghost of Tom Joad can afford a fleet of luxury cars. In December, the Boss sold the masters and publishing…

Harold J. Bowen III has competed in so many triathlons he has lost count. At age 59, he’s training for his twelfth Escape from Alcatraz race, which means that next June he will swim 1.5 miles across San Francisco Bay, ride a bike 18 miles to Golden Gate Park and run eight miles to Marina Green. Bowen describes his endurance-sports obsession as a “productive addiction,” because many years ago he realized that exercise would help him combat his attention deficit disorder. “I will keep at it as long as I’m walking,” insists Bowen, lean and tall with a slight Southern accent. As the sole asset manager of Tampa, Florida’s firefighters’ and police offcers’ $2.7 billion pension fund, Bowen has staked his success on focus and stamina. His firm—Bowen, Hanes & Company—is not…

Stop This Legalized Thievery!

There’s a pernicious procedure called civil asset forfeiture that Congress should have banned years ago. Using it, the government can seize your house, your car and your cash, even when you’ve done nothing wrong—i.e., you haven’t been charged with, much less convicted of, a crime. And this happens more often than you think. Since Congress hasn’t taken care of this, the Supreme Court should unambiguously rule that the process is utterly unconstitutional. Officers can just declare that they suspect the property in question was used in the commission of a crime or was obtained illegally, and they don’t have to prove their suspicions before seizing it. That’s right—no charges have to be filed. Then, incredibly, you must prove your property is clean. Recovering the assets seized from you is a laborious and expensive…

A thin man with intense blue eyes, Smith, 36, steps into a sunny one-bedroom with a railroad layout. It goes for $1,800 a month, a 20% premium to what it would rent for empty. It’s decorated with innocuous furniture, inoffensive linens, even taupe dishware, all designed and manufactured by his team. “Someone wants to move into an apartment in five days, we have to be able to acquire it and make it beautiful in…

How to (Finally) Get Rid of Stuff

Sealed in a plastic bag in the back of Kris Schwartz’s bedroom closet is the student nurse’s uniform that her mother wore 80 years ago, complete with pinafore and removable cuffs. Her mother’s nursing cape hangs in a downstairs closet, and a journal her mother-in-law kept is safely stashed in the desk drawer of a home office. These relics are just a metaphorical speck in the “tsunami of stuff” Schwartz says she and her husband have accumulated in their Maine home over the decades. “I have loads of books, mementos, baby clothes, and letters from people I’ve forgotten about stuffed in my closets and my cellar,” Schwartz says. “The garage is so full it’s sometimes hard to get a car into. Most of it serves no purpose or function, but I…

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE LIGHT in Sicily. It can make even the simplest, most banal scenes take on a sublimely poetic air. For Fabio Salini, the owner of I Picciotti villa near Noto, the light at dawn has a contemplative quality that’s worth the early wake-up call. A Roman jeweller known for boldly juxtaposing incongruous materials such as pearls and cord, Salini designed the villa from the ground up, in collaboration with architects Marco Bevilacqua and Corrado Papa. ‘The designers obviously did the large part of the work, but I knew well what I wanted. I imagined the structure in the form of a U around a tree,’ Salini says, explaining he kept the house on one storey to ensure it would have a strong connection to its surroundings. ‘The…

Nibokum used to think depression was a “White person’s disease.” She says, “My mom raised us to believe that Black people are strong; we don’t get depression. And prayer is how we cope—not therapy or medication.” Then, in graduate school she had symptoms of severe depression and borderline personality disorder, with multiple suicide attempts. A therapist eventually helped her get better. Roland Orzabal: Our first band Graduate [formed in Bath in 1978] was an adolescent attempt to be fashionable, playing Mod powerpop. We loved 2 Tone and The Jam, but my songwriting hadn’t developed enough. Adjacent to this was the inspiration for the name Tears For Fears, namely Arthur Janov, a Californian psychologist famous for primal scream theory, which John Lennon did for six months. Curt Smith: Roland and I both came from broken homes, raised by our mothers. The rest of Graduate didn’t share our inner demons, and the idea of writing with the depth we were now talking about was alien to them.

Porsche’s plan for the 911’s electrification is a bold transformation strategy – with plenty of imponderables. Like which type of battery to use, how to package it, and what shape to choose for minimum drag with maximum 911-ness. This story is a work in progress – progress that began in the last decade. Secrets of Great Flavor

Secrets of Great Flavor

“It’s not just about taste and aroma. Flavor also involves our emotions about food intertwined with our sense of its textures, colors, shapes, and sounds,” says Nik Sharma, the author of The Flavor Equation. “What we define as delicious is actually a combination of elements that come together in one extraordinary experience.” Turn the page for Sharma’s tips for building that full dynamic into your dishes. 5 building blocks of flavor UMAMI A special phenomenon occurs when two or more ingredients come together and produce a greater effect combined than they would have alone, Sharma says. That’s called umami synergism. To achieve it: > Combine seaweed like kombu or nori with shiitake mushrooms for a powerfully flavorful vegetarian broth. > Elevate the taste of garlic and onions by sautéing them with ginger, tomato paste, miso,…

Plant-based eating is experiencing a growth spurt. Almost one-third of Americans say they are actively trying to reduce their consumption of meat and dairy, according to the Plant Based Foods Association. Last year, 28 percent of people reported eating more protein from plant sources, 24 percent had more plant-based dairy, and 17 percent ate more plant-based meat alternatives than they did in 2019, a survey by the International Food Information Council found. Our desire for a more wellness-oriented lifestyle is fueling the trend. Health is the key reason 56 percent of people choose plant-based proteins, according to a 2020 report from the market research company Mintel, while environmental impact and animal welfare are the top concern for 26 percent, according to Mattson Consulting. “There’s been a lot of emerging science, as well…

Sneaky Fast The new 640-hp 911 Turbo S does what 911 Turbos have always done, only better and quicker. It’s happened before, but it’s been awhile. You see, C/D test drivers tend to acclimate to hard acceleration. Seat time in Teslas, Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and AMGs will do that. Our inner ears take so much violent g-force abuse that even the monstrously quick begins to feel perfectly normal. Just over the Los Angeles River, east of Hollywood, there’s a two-lane straight about an eighth of a mile long that feeds a left-right ramp that enters California Route 2. The 2 heads up the mountain toward the Angeles Crest Highway. If the ramp is empty, you get a couple seconds at full throttle as you dash toward the banking. In most cars, navigating that takes…

QUIRKY KEEPSAKES Cairo-born multi-hyphenate creative Ahmed Hefnawy has a keen eye for the more offbeat details of his home city. At his concept store/art gallery Cairopolitan, located in a glasshouse-like lean-to in the Garden City district, he translates those observations into tongue-in-cheek souvenirs that riff on the city’s pop culture. Displayed on the store’s chipboard shelves are canvas pencil cases masquerading as baladi flatbreads or the city’s ubiquitous yellow taxi signs alongside copper-plated 10 qirsh coins (Egyptian pennies) blown up to the size of drinks coasters. Peek into the gallery space next door for rotating exhibitions of prints by homegrown designers and artists. cairopolitan.com CLEVER CREATIVES It’s a lengthy climb up to the fifth floor of a nondescript building in the 19th-century jumble of Downtown to discover the homely atelier of French architect…

"La estética más industrial y menos clásica de ciudades como San Francisco o Londres, en las que he vivido, son la inspiración detrás de esta vivienda sobria pero acogedora, serena", nos cuenta. Big Acts of Storytelling

IN 2013, WHEN I WAS A REPORTER FOR THE magazine Ad Age, I had occasion to interview David Granger, who at the time was three quarters of the way into his nineteen-year tenure as Esquire’s editor in chief. He characterized the feature stories on which Esquire built its reputation—deeply reported, vibrantly written, wholly immersive—as “big acts of storytelling.” The phrase has stuck with me, and today I use it frequently when talking about Esquire articles, past and present, because big acts of storytelling have been part of the magazine since its inception. Our first issue, published in September 1933, opened with a page called “Backstage with Esquire,” our take on the contributors’ page. The column contained a note about big-act storyteller Ernest Hemingway’s contribution: “For those of you who have waistlines,…

Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti Founders Edition: A Muscled-Up Middle Child

It’s been one heck of a year in the world of desktop graphics cards. From silicon shortages to cryptocurrency craziness, the average price of a graphics card in 2021 has surged past all expectations, with models both used and new selling for multiples more than the original prices, even years after their initial release. Realities of the current marketplace aside, though, we’re here to talk about the objective performance of the latest object of desire for GPU shoppers (and likely newest target for scalpers), the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and how it stacks up against its own (hopefully, one day!) objective manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of $1,199. PROS: Beautiful, functional design, like other Founders Edition cards. Low-noise operation, even under stress. Compact profile given the raw muscle. Improves upon original…

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

HOW TO USE SNAP LAYOUTS IN WINDOWS 11

Windows 11 may be better known for its centered taskbar and rounded window borders, but the new Snap Layouts feature (sometimes also called Snap Assist) might be a more useful UI innovation. Windows, as its name implies, has long been excellent at managing and rearranging program windows, but Snap Layouts elevate the operating system (OS) to the next level. HOW DO SNAP LAYOUTS WORK? To get started with this new productivity tool, you simply hover the mouse over the Maximize icon in a program window’s upper-right corner. You’ll see a choice of layouts, like this: Note that not every application supports this feature. In my testing, the Firefox and Spotify programs showed only the old Maximize option. But you can still position them within a Snap Layout after starting the process with an…

Polaroid Now+: A Terrific Tool

Polaroid is following last year’s Now instant camera with a Bluetooth-connected model, fittingly called the Now+ ($149.99). For an extra $50, the Now+ includes features artistic photographers will love, including app-based manual control and a set of creative filters. Polaroid is also back to making interesting film stocks beyond the basic color and black-and-white options, adding some appeal for out-of-the-box photographers working in the instant medium. It remains more of a niche choice for artists and is pricier to buy and feed compared with our Editors’ Choice winner, the Fujifilm Instax SQ1. But if you’re in that niche, be happy to know that the Now+ lives up to the Polaroid name. PROS: Big, square instant photos. Color, black-and-white, and limited-run films. Easy one-button operation. Smartphone app for creative control. Tripod socket.…

Gaming the Ecosystem

Gaming the Ecosystem

Lou Barbe wouldn’t call himself an avid gamer. As an ecologist at the Université de Rennes in France, he spends most of his time with plants. But one game has captured his imagination since childhood: StarCraft, the popular online strategy franchise in which players accrue resources and construct armies of alien fighters to wage war across extraterrestrial landscapes. “I’m not at all a very good player,” says Barbe. “But I understand what’s going on.” While playing StarCraft II — the latest version of the game — a few years ago, Barbe realized that amid all the explosions and lasers, something else was happening. StarCraft was behaving a lot like an ecosystem. “We have an environment,” says Barbe. “We have resources. We have organisms that are competing in this environment. That’s the…

Palmer Luckey’s War

It’s an overcast 60-degree spring day at Anduril Industries’ test range in the drought-parched hills of Southern California, but while the weather is a tad chilly for humans, it’s perfect for surveillance. “The seeing” is good, explains Palmer Luckey, Anduril’s billionaire cofounder, who made his first fortune selling his virtual reality startup, Oculus VR, to Facebook for $2 billion in 2014. Cool temperatures mean little thermal distortion, which makes it easier for Anduril’s sentry towers to spot illegal immigrants on the U.S.-Mexico border. The self-taught tech prodigy—who will turn 30 in September and transition from whiz kid to “whiz man,” he jokes—cues his engineers to demonstrate why investors are set to pour another $1 billion into Anduril, for a total of $1.8 billion raised since 2017. (Luckey owns at least 11%…

PLUCK OF THE IRISH

It’s 12:30 a.m. in Dubai when Conor McGregor finally knocks off training for a July rematch with Dustin Poirier to jump on the phone with Forbes. “It’s been a long time coming, and I’ve been waiting on the call, to be honest,” McGregor says, having learned that he is the past year’s top-earning athlete. It’s a laurel the Irish brawler, former UFC champ and sometime boxer foretold in a now-famous video clip from 2016 in which he banters with soccer superstar Ronaldo—that year’s No. 1, with $88 million—telling him he would supplant him “maybe next year.” In May, McGregor, 32, made good on his vow, celebrating his ascent by tweeting pictures of a freshly baked cake mocked up to look like a Forbes cover. “I’m glad I pipped Ronaldo this year,”…

Spring 2020. Paul Kim, a middle-aged father of three, with a house in the suburbs and a dependable job at a Midwestern insurance company, does something a little crazy. He quits the job in order to start his own company. “It’s one thing to jump in the early part of a bull market,” he recollects, now on safer ground. “But people were freaking out. The market was tanking. It looked like a depression and a medical emergency.” In fact, the timing was not entirely crazy. Kim’s enterprise, Simplify Asset Management, markets exchange-traded funds that protect portfolios from disasters like stock market crashes and interest rate spikes. The best time to sell such things is when the world is falling apart. As the pandemic unfolded, Kim persuaded himself that either he was going…

Clear Skin Plan

“It feels like everybody is breaking out right now,” says Laurel Geraghty, M.D., a dermatologist in Oregon. Indeed, dermatologists are getting cries for help from a growing number of acne patients, and it’s no wonder. “Because of the pandemic, people who don’t usually break out are dealing with flare-ups from chronic stress and disrupted sleep,” she says. “Plus, daily mask wearing is making acne a more common complaint.” But here’s the good news: There are three new FDA-approved medications for treating moderate to severe acne and a slew of excellent OTC topicals (including adapalene, a retinoid that used to require a prescription). There’s also an entirely different game plan for getting clear. Forget drying out your skin and smothering it with products, which typically leads to inflammation and more breakouts. Dermatologists…

BROOKE SHIELDS

Where have you just come back from? ‘South Queensferry, Scotland. I was there for about two and a half months filming A Castle for Christmas. I was living in an absolute fantasy: I’d wake up in the carriage house and look out at the castle tower, then on my days off, I’d go to collect sea glass from the shore. We did a lot of horse riding through the countryside and ate unbelievable fish and chips. The beauty of shooting a movie is that you’re forced to live as much like a local as possible. It’s not really about sightseeing: you end up being immersed in a community in a way that you wouldn’t experience as a tourist. I’ve always been almost addicted to travel, because of the depth of the…

LOS ANGELES IS SYNONYMOUS WITH BEAUTY: the city is to beauty what Silicon Valley is to tech. Once considered merely the playground of the skin-deep-beautiful, with more cosmetic surgeons, dermatologists and aestheticians per capita than anywhere else in North America, it has now evolved a more inclusive landscape that innovates the latest in beauty, workouts and wellness. With so many start-ups sprouting up – a mix of slow burners and instant success stories – just like South Korea in the noughties, Los Angeles has become the destination to watch when it comes to the beauty zeitgeist. The LA star hasn’t always been in the ascendant. New York, for the longest time, was the epicentre of the biggest beauty movers and shakers, from brands and influencers to writers. But from about 2013,…
